A new initiative within ESSKA....
A new initiative of ESSKA was proposed during the ESSKA Congress in Glasgow in 2018.
The difference in number of male and female chairs and board members was
obvious. Even though the number of female speakers at the congress is
increasing, there are still few women in leading positions within the
association. The idea of forming a new group, or initiative, within
ESSKA was born.
Why is there such a gender difference and is this in fact a problem?
The need for a forum where questions like these could be discussed was
The forming of “Women of ESSKA” started: A network among women in orthopaedic surgery to facilitate mentorships, educational and scientific collaborations and recruitment of female students to orthopaedic surgery.
Women in ESSKA especially wants to promote ESSKA’s educational
and research activities among female orthopaedic surgeons during and
after their specialization. This would ideally lead to a higher
commitment of women in this surgical field to their practical work but
also to research and education of other young and aspiring females in
the orthopaedic and sports medicine world. It will offer a network among
women in orthopaedic surgery to discuss educational, scientific and
professional opportunities and goals, as well as provide a platform to
vet individual career issues and concerns.
