ESSKA JOURNALS AWARDS

In April 2016, the first Cycling for Science Tour left Amsterdam, bound for ESSKA’s Congress in Barcelona. The tour had a three-fold task - to raise awareness about exercise, raise money for the ESSKA Foundation to support research, and carry the ESSKA Congress scepter from Amsterdam to Barcelona. With that first tour a new tradition was born. Next year will already be the fourth edition in which we carry the ESSKA Congress torch from Paris to Milano. The schedule will be as follows:

For the first three editions, we had cycling-surgeons from all over the world; from China, India, Egypt, US, and most of all a variety of European countries including Ukraine and Russia; and with varying degrees of expertise (cycling expertise, that is!). Given the length of the stages and the 7500 meters altitude, only trained cyclists could complete the full 2024 tour, but there are shortcuts available for stages 3, 4 and 5 for less trained cyclists.

The leadership was delighted to be present at the SIAGSACOT Congress in Milan on 13-15 April to meet our Italian colleagues and to share information about the Congress.

It was our honour to welcome Jean-François Clervoy, French Astronaut to deliver the Presidential Guest Lecture entitled: BOLDLY TOGETHER, EXPLORE AND DISCOVER.

He shared with the audience his vast personal experience of Space travel and discovery and explored in detail the themes of metal and physical preparation of going into space, team work and innovation. A truly inspirational lecture!

It was a full house at the Inaugural ESSKA ESMA - IOC Team Physician Course welcoming over 100 international team physicians and physiotherapists and a top-class faculty. A huge thank you to everybody who took part and a special thank you to IOC for their great collaboration and to the Paris Olympic Games Team who delivered a fascinating overview of the road to 2024 Olympics.

The 20^th ESSKA Congress that took place in Paris one month ago was the first major face-to-face event in the International Orthopedic Community for more than 3 years. It was such a joy to be reunited with colleagues and friends who all contributed the amazing success of this event.

First of all, a fantastic THANK YOU to all of you who came in large numbers (more than 3,600 participants) from all over the world to celebrate the theme of “Science opens the mind” and the spirit of ESSKA.

The new format of the 3-day Scientific Programme and the dazzling crescendo of the gala dinner and party on Friday evening both reflect the objectives of the mission entrusted to us: scientific excellence but also conviviality and the pleasure of reliving “All together”. A faculty of more than 800 participated in this success and we would like to thank you all. The high attendance in the session rooms even early in the morning showed your interest in this Scientific Programme during these three rich and intense days.

The highlights were numerous; Highlight and Keynote Lectures, Symposia, ICL, Partner Symposia with European and International Societies, Award sessions, Free paper sessions and e-posters, Cycling for Science, Residents' Programme, the Team Physician course with the support of the IOC and the COJO 2024 (first of its kind for ESSKA) and so many moments of sharing...

We must salute the incredible work of the Scientific Chairs, all the Sections and Committees and the Board of ESSKA who have opened up their mind to offer you this innovative Scientific Programme for this unmissable Congress.

A special thank you to the French orthopedic community (SFA, SOFCOT, SFTS, SFHG) who have worked for years supporting us in the preparation and success of the Congress.

Jean-François Clervoy's presentation on 'Boldy Together' was a moment of great intensity, perfectly illustrating the concerns we encounter on a daily basis in our surgical and human practices. The strength of teamwork, audacity, innovation and communication are all extremely important parameters for the success of ESSKA's development, as Jacques Menetrey reminded us.

The quality of the work of K.I.T Group, OSS audiovisual and ESSKA's Administrative Dream Team, all working in the shadows with an incredible energy were key elements that made this international success possible.

Many magical moments, three intense days with many emotions, smiles on faces without masks and human encounters that will remain etched in the history of ESSKA. It was an exceptional pleasure to celebrate ESSKA's 40th anniversary in Paris and to honor all the pillars and founders of this young and dynamic Society.

Thank you again to all of you for coming to celebrate without pressure the Spirit of ESSKA, which combines scientific excellence and the joy of being together, in Paris with the French touch.

These rich and precious moments will remain in the ESSKA memory for ever more.

The exhibition is central to the Congress. It’s the place where Congress visitors - whether they are surgeons or scientists or physiotherapists - can learn what is available for their work. And it’s the place where the companies can display their latest products. It is also a place to network, simply to stop by for a chat and a coffee.

We were delighted to have the leading companies, serving the orthopaedics industry, represented again. We hosted companies from many countries including Great Britain and the US, from Germany and France and Italy, and farther afield from China and India. They covered everything from pain-relief to virtual-surgery, from wound-care to arthroscopy and joint-management. In fact, all the services and products that our industry needs and relies upon. They were all there!

To be precise, we hosted 69 exhibitors, whose stands occupied the central space around the main auditorium.

The fellows reception took place on Thursday 28 April 2022 at the ESSKA Paris Congress venue.  ESSKA 2020-2022 President Jacques Menetrey highlighted the importance of travelling fellowships and the unique exchange of knowledge. He then welcomed the 2022 ESSKA-AOSSM DJO Travelling Group from the USA: Ned Amendola and fellows: Brian Waterman, Mary Mulcahey and Xinning Li. The travelling group then presented their travelling fellowship experience.

2022 is an important year in the history of ESSKA as we celebrate our 40^th birthday! This milestone marks four decades of medical science, education and excellence which will all be highlighted and celebrated at the ESSKA Congress in Paris in April.

No celebration is complete without friends and 'family' so we hope to see all of our members, friends and community who constitute our 'family', face to face in Paris!
