Following a highly successful first edition, applications are now open for the KSSTA / JEO Rising Stars Programme 2026. This one-year initiative offers early- and mid-career clinicians and researchers the opportunity to engage in peer review, receive mentorship from senior editors, and contribute directly to the editorial work of the ESSKA journals.

Selected participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Serve as active reviewers for KSSTA and JEO
  • Receive mentorship from senior editors
  • Participate in structured reviewer training and journal clubs
  • Collaborate on a final systematic review or editorial for publication

Participation is voluntary and involves a commitment of approximately two reviews per month over a 12-month period, alongside engagement in the programme’s educational activities.

Key dates

  • Application deadline: 15 February 2026
  • Programme start: 1 March 2026

Eligibility

Applicants must be under 45 years of age and have at least 10 Medline (PubMed)-indexed publications.

The ESSKA journals KSSTA and JEO have launched the KSSTA/JEO Rising Stars team, a joint initiative aimed at fostering collaboration and academic development among emerging researchers.

What is the KSSTA/JEO Rising Stars Programme?

The KSSTA/JEO Rising Stars Programme is designed to support the next generation of orthopaedic researchers by providing mentorship, structured training, and opportunities for scientific collaboration. Participants will engage in peer review for KSSTA and JEO journals, contribute to systematic reviews, and integrate into a growing network of leading orthopaedic experts. This initiative is led by the Editors-in-Chief Michael T. Hirschmann and Stefano Zaffagnini, with mentorship provided by Associate Editors Baris Kocaoglu and Davide Cucchi.

Meet the KSSTA/JEO Rising Stars 2025

Dr. Stefano Ghirardelli (USA/Austria)

Hospital for Special Surgery, USA | Paracelsus Medical University, Austria

Dr. Ghirardelli is currently a Clinical Fellow at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York and a PhD candidate at Paracelsus Private Medical University in Salzburg. His research focuses on molecular diagnostics for periprosthetic joint infections and knee arthroplasty techniques. He has trained at Stanford, Toronto, and Salzburg, gaining experience in surgical methods.

Dr. Grégoire Micicoi (France)

University Institute for Locomotion and Sports, Nice University Hospital, France

Dr. Micicoi specialises in conservative knee surgery, arthroplasty, and revision surgery. He holds a medical thesis in single-stage bilateral total hip arthroplasty and a science thesis in osteotomies biomechanics. With over 40 publications in international journals, Dr. Micicoi is an active member of orthopaedic societies in France.

Dr. Zainab Aqeel Khan (Pakistan/Sweden)

PharmEvo| Karolinska Institutet, Sweden

Dr. Aqeel Khan has expertise in biostatistics, epidemiology, and physiotherapy. She has held research roles in Switzerland, Sweden, and Pakistan, focusing on orthopaedic advancements and sports injury rehabilitation. She is currently Assistant Manager of Medical Affairs at PharmEvo and a Guest Researcher at Karolinska Institutet, working on systematic reviews in sports surgery.

Dr. Lorenz Pichler (Austria/Germany)

Medical University of Vienna, Austria | Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Germany

Dr. Pichler is in his final year of residency at the Medical University of Vienna and is a doctoral student and visiting researcher at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. His focus includes knee joint phenotyping, posture and motion analysis, and orthobiologics. He is involved in ÖGOuT’s Arthroplasty Committee and the Resident Steering Group of the German-speaking Society for Arthroscopy and Joint Surgery (AGA).

Dr. Giacomo Dal Fabbro (Italy/Australia)

Sydney Orthopaedic Research Institute, Australia | University of Bologna, Italy

Dr. Dal Fabbro is currently a Clinical Fellow in Knee Surgery at the Sydney Orthopaedic Research Institute and a PhD candidate in the Surgical Science and Innovative Technologies PhD Programme at the University of Bologna. He has been involved in multiple research projects, including clinical trials on knee osteotomies for treating knee osteoarthritis, funded by the Italian Ministry of Health and private organisations. His areas of interest span sports medicine, joint preservation, and joint replacement strategies, and he believes in integrating research with clinical practice to advance orthopaedic outcomes.

A Valuable Learning Experience for Young Researchers in Orthopaedics

This September, the ESSKA Journal of Experimental Orthopaedics (JEO) Fellowship welcomed three talented fellows: Lorenz Pichler from Austria, Yuta Nakanishi from Japan, and Anil E. Özbek from Turkey. These fellows had the unique opportunity to participate in a comprehensive, hands-on learning experience at two prestigious institutions: Ospedale Galeazzi in Milan and the Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute in Bologna. The fellowship aimed to provide valuable insights into both the scientific and editorial aspects of orthopaedic research, along with practical surgical and research experiences in orthopaedic basic science.

Lorenz Pichler’s Experience at Ospedale Galeazzi

Lorenz Pichler expressed his gratitude and enthusiasm for his time at Ospedale Galeazzi, hosted by JEO’s Associate Editor, Dr. Laura De Girolamo, and her team. He shared:

"I had an amazing time during the JEO Editorial and Research Fellowship at Ospedale Galeazzi, hosted by Laura De Girolamo. Laura and her team put together a fantastic program that covered everything from discussions on research methods and the editorial process of a journal to hands-on sessions in their extensive lab and time in the OR."

Lorenz emphasized his appreciation for the time spent in the operating room with the supportive team at Galeazzi, as well as the opportunities to learn about basic sciences and the journey from bench to bedside. As a surgeon, Lorenz also couldn't resist mentioning his enjoyment of time in the operating room, especially when paired with the excellent espresso from the Galeazzi team's coffee machine. Lorenz concluded with a heartfelt "Grazie a tutti!" to his hosts at Galeazzi.

Yuta Nakanishi’s Insights from the Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute

Yuta Nakanishi had an equally enriching experience at the Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute, under the guidance of JEO’s Editor-in-Chief, Prof. Stefano Zaffagnini, alongside Dr. Alberto Grassi and their dedicated team. Reflecting on his time there, he said:

"I would like to thank Prof. Stefano Zaffagnini, Dr. Alberto Grassi, and their team at the Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute for warmly welcoming my co-fellow, Dr. Anil Özbek, and me. Witnessing the 'over-the-top' technique performed by Prof. Zaffagnini, along with his detailed explanations, was an inspiring and educational experience."

Yuta also noted the in-depth discussions with Dr. Grassi about ongoing research, as well as a thorough article review with Dr. Gian Andrea Lucidi. He expressed that these interactions showcased the meticulousness and dedication of the team at Rizzoli and the JEO Editorial Board.

On the 1st of June, the KSSTA and JEO editorial teams convened for a strategic meeting at the invitation of Prof. Michael Hirschmann, the new Editor-in-Chief of KSSTA, and Prof. Stefano Zaffagnini, the Editor-in-Chief of JEO. The meeting took place at Kantonspital Baselland Bruderholz in Switzerland, with attendees participating both on-site and online.

Throughout the day, we delved into various aspects of the journals' structures and strategies to plan for the future of our sister journals. The field of orthopaedic journals is experiencing continual expansion and increasing competition, necessitating constant updates to address emerging challenges. These challenges include the integration of AI into scientific writing and the threat posed by predatory journals. The primary aim of this strategic meeting was to establish new guidelines for KSSTA and JEO authors and reviewers and to define the best strategies for enhancing the quality of published manuscripts to improve their impact factor.

Key topics discussed during the meeting included the journals' editorial board structures, research scopes, and opportunities for journal collaboration, among many others. By analyzing citation rates in correlation with keyword searches, we were able to identify current hot topics, which will warrant future focus for both journals.

Additionally, we presented an in-depth analysis of the journals' impact factors and explored possible strategies to maintain our position as leading sources of impactful research in the realm of sports medicine. Lastly, we developed new social media strategies to disseminate high-quality research more effectively and broaden the international audience for both journals.

In summary, the strategic meeting provided valuable insights and laid the groundwork for future initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality and impact of KSSTA and JEO. We look forward to implementing these strategies and continuing to lead in the field of orthopaedic research.

ESSKA in partnership with ON Foundation Award Literature Grants to Carlos Miguel Marto and Hamid Razak

ESSKA congratulates the two winners of the ON/ESSKA Literature grants 2023 Carlos Miguel Marto and Hamid Razak. Marto's project, titled "Cartilage Regeneration Technologies: A Scoping Review and Future Directions," has been awarded with the ON/ESSKA Literature Grant on the "Future of Cartilage.". Similarly, Hamid Razak has received the ON/ESSKA Literature Grant for his work on "Stem Cells," specifically focusing on the "Efficacy of Allograft Stem Cell Therapy in Osteoarthritis." Both Dr Marto and Dr Razak will have their publication fees covered at JEO, ESSKA's official open-access journal.

The grants, open to all ESSKA members, received numerous high-quality applications, reflecting the dedication of researchers within the orthopedic community. ESSKA extends gratitude to all applicants and acknowledges the support of the ON Foundation in advancing orthopedic research initiatives.

Interested in publishing your study in the Journal of Experimental Orthopaedics (JEO) and looking for a way to cover the Article Processing Charge? There are several different possibilities.

Publishing Open Access (OA) has a lot of benefits for the authors and the research community, but comes with a price; the Article Processing Charge to be more specific. However, there are several options that could help authors cover these charges.

Open Access publishing means that research content is open to everyone to read and essentially free to society. It is all about taking down barriers and making sure that the most important research outputs reach the general population. And there are several benefits for the authors, as well; OA articles are viewed and cited more often than articles behind a pay wall, providing greater visibility of the authors’ research.

In order to publish Open Access under a Creative Commons licence, authors are asked to pay an Article Processing Charge (APC) which covers the costs involved in every stage of the publication process, from administrating peer review to copy-editing and hosting the final article on dedicated servers.

For authors interested in publishing their studies OA in the Journal of Experimental Orthopaedics, the official Open Access journal of ESSKA, there are several ways to obtain funding for the APC. JEO’s publisher, Springer, has an Open Access agreement with many institutions which cover OA publishing costs for affiliated researchers. You can find out more about Springer’s OA agreements and whether you may be entitled to publish with your fees covered, here. Moreover, Springer offers APC waivers and discounts to papers whose corresponding authors are based in countries classified by the World Bank as low- or lower-middle-income countries, respectively. For other countries, article-processing charge waivers or discounts are granted on a case-by-case basis to authors with insufficient funds. Authors can request a waiver or discount during the submission process.
