ESMA evolved from ESSKA's sports committee. An application for section status was made by more than 80 specialists and was approved by ESSKA's General Assembly.
It was officially established on 5 May 2016.
ESMA's intention is to create specific and specialised working groups. Each group will seek co-operative partners in outside sports federations, being represented by their own "ambassador", who is an ESMA Board Member.
ESMA regularly organises both open and closed meetings, speciality conferences and courses for qualified surgeons. It also plans various scientific projects and publications.
