ARTICULAR CARTILAGE COMMITTEE

About Articular Cartilage Committee:

The Cartilage Committee of ESSKA is devoted to educate surgeons and other caregivers to improve the current care of articular cartilage defects. The load bearing joints such as the ankle, knee and hip are especially impaired by cartilage defects or non-functional cartilage. Cartilage injuries are frequent and found in 4-7 % of all knees subjected to knee arthroscopies. Furthermore, knee function is often reduced to the same level as for patients scheduled for knee prosthesis, although the cartilage damaged patients may be 30 years younger. The Cartilage Committee of ESSKA aims to improve the knowledge and care for these difficult cartilage injuries through its efforts and accomplishments. The committee is comprised of cartilage-devoted clinicians and researchers from Europe, but also from throughout the world. Previous efforts and accomplishment of the committee have included publication of the Cartilage Repair: Current Concepts, the ESSKA congresses symposia, many committee meetings, and review studies published in the KSSTA journal. The Cartilage Committee will continue the work initiated with a main focus on future ESSKA congresses where new knowledge will be presented in symposia, instructional course lectures, and the second volume of the cartilage book. There are ever increasing numbers of sports related joint injuries that tragically end the aspirations, hopes and dreams prematurely of both potential athletic superstars, but also everyday recreational athletes. The treatment of cartilage injuries has for decades and remains still today particularly challenging. Consequently, the Cartilage Committee is determined to improve the prevention and treatment of cartilage injuries using the best evidence and outcomes-based practice available. The coalition of the ESSKA organization, its members and corporate partners is essential to help achieve this ambitious goal. Committee objectives are:

-Improve the understanding and treatment of cartilage defects through regular communication to the society and its members by making available educational publications based on the latest outcomes and evidenced-based literature.

-Promote the exchange of ideas and collaboration in the agreed projects of the committee through regular meetings and communications.

-Educational symposia and instructional courses to improve cartilage repair as an essential part of the program in all ESSKA congresses.

-Encourage ESSKA members to conduct well designed basic and clinical studies, preferably with publication in the KSSTA journal.

-Focus on challenging problems by publishing standardized meta-analyses of areas with a lack of in-depth knowledge in the field of cartilage treatment.

-Improve the collaboration between basic and clinical scientists in the field of cartilage repair.

-Provide guidelines for cartilage surgery procedures, prevention and rehabilitation to harmonize the practice of both surgery and physiotherapy.

-Provide an open access for ESSKA members to encourage and facilitate the exchange of ideas for improvement of patient care.
